The Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant (WTP) supplies water to approximately 13,000 people in Tobercurry and, Ballymote and the surrounding areas. For approximately three years, these communities were living with a boil water notice as the drinking water produced by the WTP was not safe to drink due to the presence of cryptosporidium and elevated Trihalomethanes (THMs).
Coffey & Coftec worked with Irish Water in a €10m project to upgrade the Lough Talt WTP which involved the construction of new water tanks, addition of new containerised process units and the installation of a water quality monitoring solution for detection of any supply issues.
Accurate and reliable real-time water quality monitoring is crucial in maintaining continuity of service for municipal potable water supplies and Coftec identified the s::can products as the ideal solution to meet the demanding requirements at Lough Talt WTP.
The s::can range of instrumentation, controllers and software packages are designed to provide peace of mind to both asset owners and consumers. At Lough Talt WTP Coffey/Coftec installed and commissioned over 35No. individual instruments which monitor over critical parameters at 10No. sample points throughout the site. These field instruments are integrated into the overarching system architecture to provide a fully automated and controlled water purification process. The s::can instrumentation at Lough Talt monitors and controls multiple process stages including, filtration, chemical dosing, disinfection and ultimate final water quality, running 24/7 to ensure uninterrupted supply of up to 400m3 per hour. Remote monitoring and feedback on all instruments in the field via the moni::tool software package combined with a fully functional SCADA system showcases the plant at Lough Talt as an industry leader in smart water applications.
Upgrade of the Lough Talt WTP plant commenced last year, and the works were completed in October 2020. The new plant is providing safe drinking water to the local communities and is forecast to continue to do for the next 10 years. The water quality monitoring solution from Coftec and s::can will be a key tool in turning this forecast in reality.
